7 types of composition - Secondary School

Here are 7 common types of composition for secondary school, along with a brief discussion of their formats:

Narrative Essay

Format: Tells a story with a clear plot, characters, setting, and a theme or message.

Focus: Engaging the reader with vivid descriptions, dialogue, and a compelling storyline.

Example: "Write a story about a time you faced a difficult challenge."

Example: "Explain the causes and effects of climate change."

Argumentative Essay

Format: Presents a claim or position on a topic and supports it with evidence and reasoning.

Focus: Persuading the reader to agree with the writer's viewpoint by addressing counterarguments and using rhetorical devices.

Reflective Essay

Format: Explores the writer's personal thoughts, feelings, and experiences related to a specific topic or event.

Focus: Sharing insights and reflections on personal growth, values, or lessons learned.

Example: "Reflect on a time when you made a mistake and what you learned from it."

Personal Recount Essay

Format: Recounts a personal experience or event in a chronological order, often with a focus on the writer's emotions and reflections.

Focus: Sharing a meaningful or memorable experience and its impact on the writer.

Example: "Write about a time you overcame a fear."

Discursive Essay

Format: Examines different perspectives or sides of an issue, presenting arguments and evidence for each.

Focus: Exploring a topic from multiple angles and arriving at a balanced conclusion or viewpoint.

Example: "Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of social media."

Additional Tips:

  • Understand the prompt: Carefully read and analyze the essay question to determine the specific requirements and focus.

  • Plan and organize: Create an outline to structure your essay logically and ensure a clear flow of ideas.

  • Use strong language: Choose vivid words, precise language, and varied sentence structures to engage the reader.
