Additional tips:

Show, don't tell: Instead of simply stating that a character was surprised, use vivid descriptions to show their reaction.

Consider the character's personality: A stoic character might react differently to surprise than an emotional one.

Build suspense: Gradually reveal the surprising information to heighten the reader's anticipation and the character's surprise.

Use strong verbs: Verbs like "gasped," "stumbled," and "recoiled" can add power to your descriptions.

Use sensory details: Appeal to the reader's senses to create a more immersive experience. For example, describe the sound of a gasp, the feel of a cold sweat, or the taste of fear.

By using these tips and phrases, students can create more vivid and engaging descriptions of their characters' reactions to surprise.

We hope these tips would help you write great phrases to describe surprise in your compositions.
