Common P2 Composition Topics in Singapore

Most schools use 4 panel pictures. These 4 panels usually tell a story. In some cases, the last picture would be a blank, so the student must think and write the ending. 

Primary 2 students in Singapore often encounter composition topics that revolve around familiar experiences, values, and imaginative scenarios. Here are some common examples:

Personal Experiences

  • First Day at School: This classic topic allows students to recount their initial experiences at school, focusing on their feelings, interactions with teachers and classmates, and memorable moments.

  • A Time I Helped Someone: This topic encourages students to reflect on their acts of kindness and compassion, fostering empathy and understanding.

  • Getting a pet: Students can describe their beloved pets, sharing details about their appearance, personality, and the joy they bring.

  • A Special Person in My Life: This topic allows students to express their appreciation for someone significant in their lives, such as a parent, grandparent, or close friend.

Values and Character

  • Honesty: This topic encourages students to explore the value of truthfulness and its impact on relationships. Common themes may involve returning a wallet full of money or cheating on a test. 

  • An act of kindness: This topic promotes empathy and compassion, encouraging students to reflect on their interactions with others and the importance of kindness. Common themes may involve helping the elderly or a handicapped person.

  • Overcoming a Challenge: This topic helps students develop resilience and a growth mindset by encouraging them to share stories of overcoming obstacles. Common themes may involve winning a competition or overcoming stage fright.

  • Friendship: This topic allows students to explore the importance of friendship, focusing on qualities like loyalty, trust, and mutual support. Common themes may involve helping a friend, sharing an umbrella, buying food for a friend who had forgotten his/her wallet. 

Other notable topics 

  • Going to the library: This topic may involve themes like learning to borrow books, getting reprimanded by the librarian for making noise, receiving a fine for vandalism etc. To ace this topic, use vocabulary words related to the environment like librarian, fiction, non fiction etc

  • A new classmate: This topic involve having preconceived notions about a new classmate due to appearance or mannerisms but learning to not judge a book by its cover after overcoming a problem which changes the perception on the classmate. 

  • Going to the supermarket: This topic may involve learning how to shop in a supermarket, learning not to shoplift, learning to return an item using a receipt. To ace this topic, use vocabulary words related to the environment like aisles, grocery, cashier etc. 

  • A careless act: This topic revolves around responsibility. The common ideas involve breaking a precious vase, losing a sibling, or losing a wallet. The main character learns to turn over a new leaf and become responsible. The theme may involve seeking forgiveness or reflecting on one's actions.

  • Standing up to a wrong act: This theme usually revolves around standing up to a bully. The bully may be picking on an animal or a person. To ace this topic, describe the physical appearance of the bully and the victim. Use a lot of phrases to describe fear. 

  • An argument: This theme revolves around conflict management. Common themes may include a sibling or a friend breaking a toy and learning how to forgive them. 

  • Going to the doctor or dentist: This theme is all about being nervous about a new experiences. It is about overcoming the fear of injections or teeth cleaning, learning in the end, there is nothing to be afraid about. 

  • Helping a sick family member: This topic revolves around compassion. One of the parents may be sick, the main character takes over the responsibility of household chores and nursing them back to health. In the end, the main character has a deep appreciation for all that the parent does for him or her. 

Remember, the key to writing a successful P2 composition is to:

  • Plan: Brainstorm ideas and organize thoughts before writing. 

  • Use Simple Language: Focus on clear and concise sentences.

  • Show, Don't Tell: Use vivid descriptions to bring the story to life.

  • Practice Regularly: Consistent writing practice helps improve fluency and confidence.

  • Read Aloud: This can help identify areas for improvement in sentence structure and flow.

Most importantly, encourage students to enjoy the writing process and express themselves freely!
